LIVING STORY · VOL.001
A small piece of architecture for everyday water.
Explore why THE COASTER uses porcelain tile, how its one-piece construction differs from a mosaic, and how an object made for water can move beyond the dining table.
Read the Living Story ↗A coaster repeatedly meets condensation, wet glassware and small spills. THE reconsidered which material is best suited to that daily relationship with water and chose porcelain tile: water-resistant, easy to wipe clean and visually composed even when wet.
At first glance, THE COASTER appears to be a four-by-four arrangement of small mosaic tiles. It is not assembled from separate pieces. A dedicated mould forms the coaster as a single structure, preserving the visual language of tile while providing the strength needed for everyday use. Because the recessed lines are part of the glazed surface rather than open grout joints, they do not function as absorbent seams.
The 85 × 85 mm footprint balances the palm, portability and the proportion of different cups and glasses. At 8 mm thick, it retains the weight and presence of a small porcelain object rather than feeling like a temporary sheet placed on a table.
White is clean and naturally suited to spaces around water. Gray is calm and neutral, fitting easily with wood, grey tones and modern interiors. Navy creates a stronger dark accent on a tabletop. Because Navy is deeper in colour, surface scratches may be more visible than on White or Gray.
Its most familiar place is beneath a glass, cup or bottle. Since porcelain tile is made to coexist with water, the coaster can also provide a defined resting place for small items near a kitchen sink, washbasin or bathroom. Use it on a stable surface and choose an application appropriate to its size and weight.
Wipe away condensation after use or wash the coaster in the same manner as porcelain tableware when needed. Avoid forcefully rubbing the glazed surfaces together, as friction may leave scratches. Store multiple coasters so their faces do not scrape against one another. Marks may be especially visible on Navy.
